A figure worked in black rises from a swirling river in a picture framed with trees, animals and natural imagery. Artist Cathie Bleck of Cleveland–formerly of Chicago and an illustrator at the Tribune–works in scratchboard, a medium where ink pigment is layered with clay and the clay is then scratched away. It’s unforgiving–you can’t erase your scratches, “and the clay dries quickly so you have to work quickly,” she says. But that’s what she likes about it. Bleck’s images all have to do with nature, and the scratchboard medium is very tactile and requires motion. The river in this picture is the chaotic, fast-moving current of life, she says, which is to be embraced. “Open Spaces” is on display at I space, as well as in a new book. Bleck will give a talk on the stories behind her work at the show’s closing.
