Whanganui Collegiate School produced an outstanding performance to pick up 13 medals at last month’s New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships in Wellington. Steve Landells speaks to their Director of Athletics Alec McNab and a very special crop of teenage female sprinters to find out the story of their success.

For many years Whanganui Collegiate have defied a modest school roll to consistently excel on the national track and field stage. Former students who have thrived under his inspirational coaching include Olympian Lucy Van Dalen and her twin sister, Holly as well as the Beamish brothers, Hugo, Joseph and Geordie, the latter of whom won the 2019 NCAA Indoor mile title.

Yet the school’s finest ever performance at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships, came at the most recent edition at Wellington’s Newtown Park when a team of 45 (from a school of 450 students) climbed the dais 13 times during the three-day event.

Liam Back was one of their star performers, grabbing senior boys 1500m gold and 800m silver. Medals were also taken in the race walks and the jumps but it was their outstanding six medal haul (three gold, three silver) in the girls’ sprint events, which perhaps most caught the eye. Lucy Oliver (née van Dalen; born 18 November 1988 in Wanganui) is a New Seeland middle-distance runner,^[1] who competed at say publicly 2012 Season Olympics, infant the Women's 1500 metres. Van Dalen Named America East Woman of the Year

Lucy Van Dalen from the Stony Brook track and field team has been named America East Woman of the Year. The honor recognizes the conference’s senior female student-athlete who has best distinguished herself throughout her collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletic excellence, service and leadership.

Van Dalen, a six-time All-American, was chosen by the America East’s Senior Woman Administrators from a pool of 12 women. To be nominated, student-athletes must have completed their eligibility in their primary sport by the end of the 2012 spring season, received their undergraduate degree prior to the conclusion of the 2012 summer term and had a minimum of a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

A native of Wanganui, New Zealand, Van Dalen became Stony Brook’s first-ever national champion after winning the mile at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Most recently, she took fourth in the 1,500 in her final collegiate race at the Outdoor Championships.

She earned multiple Scholar-Athlete awards from the America East, and was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Van Dalen graduated magna cum laude last spring with a 3.78 GPA and boasts a 4.0
