Royal Hanneford Circus
American-based touring family circus
The Royal Hanneford Circus is an American-based touring family circus. With origins dating back to 1690, it has been called the oldest circus in the world.[1] The family first performed as a traveling troupe in 1807. The modern Royal Hanneford Circus was formed in 1965, when Tommy Hanneford began producing shows featuring the family.

𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀: Although there are many phenomenal equestrians that have graced the circus ring, one man is considered by many as the top trick rider in circus history. Born in 1891 into a circus family in England, Edwin “Poodles” Hanneford began his riding career at a very young age. He was a natural comedian and discovered that audiences loved his over-the-top antics mixed with his family’s skilled bareback riding. The Hanneford family, including Poodles, his mother (Elizabeth), his brother (George), and sister (Lizzie) came to the United States in 1915 to join Barnum & Bailey Circus. They performed in both circus and vaudeville in the following years, and Poodles also had an extensive Hollywood career. Although the brothers eventually went their separate ways, Poodles continued to perform with many others, including his wife, Grace, and daughter, Gracie, until his death in 1967.
