LAS VEGAS — Sometimes, it seems, baby boys roll out of their cribs and start riding bulls.

That wasn’t the case for Valdiron de Oliveira.

Oliveira grew up on a ranch in Aparecida de Goiania, Brazil, where he rode steers and horses.

Not until Oliveira turned 18 did he climb aboard his first bull.

“It was hard when I started bull riding because of all the travel I had to do and I didn’t have much money,” Oliveira said.

Oliveira’s early days of bull riding are a distant memory now as he is a certified star on the Professional Bull Riders circuit. The PBR, which was founded in 1992, has been headquartered in Pueblo since July 2007.

Oliveira had his star power on display Thursday night when he won the second round at the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series World Finals XVII with a 91.50 score on a bull named Spit Fire.

Oliveira, who is fourth in the world standings, made it two rides in a row as he scored a 82.50 on a bull named Ready Freddy on Friday night. In the first round, Oliveira was bucked off a bull named Minor Incident.

“We come here to the Finals for five days to have fun and when I fall off a bull I know I need to fix that,” the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Oliveira said. “I just try my best

“It is very hard because I need to explain to the fans,” Oliveira said. “They have followed me every year. I did this for the sport for 10 years. I think I did a good job. 402 bulls I stay on and I have two more. I feel like I complete my work. I feel I completed my job and it is time to retire.”

There was a commercial break during Round 4 of the 2016 Built Ford Tough World Finals on CBS Sports Network when the 37-year-old hung his head over the bucking chutes and looked down at Flight Plan.
