Chu was not among the states that were distributed as a regional states at the beginning of the Western Zhou period 西周 (11th cent.-770 BCE). Its ruling dynasty was of a different origin than most of the regional dynasties of the Zhou empire. Another name of Chu is Jing 荊. Chu was first located in the valley of the River Han 漢 and then moved southeast into the Yangtze Valley. During the Spring and Autumn period 春秋 (770 - 5th cent. BCE) it gradually expanded towards the north and east.
